Nintendo 3DS is the next generation of Nintendo's handheld gaming console. The console is unique in is ability to produce 3D effects without the need for special glasses. The 3DS console is due to be released first in Japan on the 26th of February 2011 with Australia, Europe and North America following in March 2011. Nicknamed DS3 in some quarters, the console is the third iteration of the DS consoles the others being DS and DSi.

The console features the following dimensions 5.3 x 2.9 x.8 and weighs about 230 grams (8 oz). The top screen is a HD compatible touch screen with a resolution of 800 X 24 (opening up the possibility to play 3D movies and watch TV). The second screen has a resolution of 320 x 240.

The DS3 console will be compatible with your DSi game titles which is good news considering the fact that people are still upset with Nintendo for not providing a slot for Game Boy Advance title when Nintendo iterated from DS to the DSi model.

The Nintendo 3DS will also offer a portable version of the Wii Virtual console. This will probably allow for GBA lovers to download GBA title for gameplay on the 3DS. As with the launch of every new console, the 3DS will open up the possibility to launch new game titles. However, Nintendo has issued a possible warning that 3D games on this console might have an effect on children age 6 and below. This has got to do with the way 3D images are sent to the brain which can damage a child's eye sight. To counter this, Nintendo is including a 3D lock feature using a PIN. When this feature is in operation the console will display a regular image instead of a 3D view.

The Nintendo DS3 console still keeps features of the original DSi model such as the microphone and touch-screen and include new one like the accelerometers which measures speed in a particular direction, the gyroscope which can be used in measuring orientation, the pedometer which can be used in step tracking. The 3DS also features three cameras two at the back and a front facing one. The camera can be used in taking and viewing 3D pictures.

Multiplayer online play is still lacking in Nintendo 3DS with Nintendo still opting to focus on local interaction. Gamers can connect to the Internet via WiFi to download 3DS contents.

The 3DS is set to bring a new dimension to handheld gaming console. The possibility of playing HD movies and watching TV is quite an exciting prospect. In all this makes the 3DS a console worth looking forward to.
